Reality Check Can alcohol cure a cold

When it comes to quick remedies for colds, many people insist that a glass of brandy or a hot toddy -- whiskey with hot water and lemon juice -- is just what the doctor ordered.

It's not difficult to see how mild inebriation might have the potential to relieve cold and flu symptoms, but so far no study has shown that alcohol has the ability to kill germs in the bloodstream or stop a cold in its tracks. And while alcohol may provide temporary relief, it can prolong symptoms by increasing dehydration.

Nonetheless, two large studies have found that moderate drinking will not cure colds but can help keep them at bay. One, by researchers at Carnegie Mellon in 1993, looked at 391 adults and found that resistance to colds increased with moderate drinking, except in smokers.

Then, in 2002, researchers in Spain followed 4,300 healthy adults, examining their habits and susceptibility to colds. The study, in The American Journal of Epidemiology, found no relationship between the incidence of colds and consumption of beer, spirits, vitamin C or zinc. But drinking eight to 14 glasses of wine per week, particularly red wine, was linked to as much as a 60 percent reduction in the risk of developing a cold. The scientists suspected this had something to do with the antioxidant properties of wine.

Brushing our teeth is harder than it looks

Honestly, how hard can it be? We've been doing it twice a day since kindergarten. But still we can't get it right.

"Odd as it sounds, most people are no good at brushing their teeth," said Dr. Paul Warren, a dentist and a vice president of scientific relations for Procter & Gamble Oral Care.

All you have to do is go tooth by tooth, bristles to the gumline, for at least two minutes, according to the American Dental Association.

But most adults fail miserably. We brush haphazardly, concentrating on the front-and-center teeth and making short work of our molars. For many, the cardinal sin is scouring their gumlines as if plaque were bathtub grout.

Patience is also no virtue among toothbrushers.

"They spend an average of 47 seconds doing it," Warren said.

All of that incompetence is good news for toothbrush makers. The toothbrush is a mature product, one that designers and industry analysts say has reached far limits of amelioration. But thanks to our ineptitude, toothbrush designers have a raison d'etre.

Lately, toothbrush makers have feverishly reworked one of the most worked-over devices known to man. Colgate has presented 14 manual brushes in the past five years. Oral-B typically introduces one electronic brush a year, the fruition of the work of more than 300 designers and engineers over three to five years.

Never mind that the device we know -- bristles mounted on a 6-inch-long handle -- has been around for more than 5,000 years. Or that its job, removing remnants of your last meal, be it a bowl of Wheaties or a slab of roasted boar, has remained unchanged. The toothbrush has had more makeovers than Michael Jackson.

Some changes are merely cosmetic, but the majority are intended to make the simple task of brushing even simpler.

"Consumers aren't good at brushing, so we're taking them out of the equation," said Graham Mott, a research and development executive for Philips Sonicare. "We're making the toothbrush idiot-proof."

How to explain our ineptness when it comes to oral hygiene?

"Most people don't really understand the process or don't want to spend the time and effort they should," said Dr. Howard S. Glazer, a former president of the Academy of General Dentistry, an organization devoted to advocacy and continuing education.

People don't follow their dentists' instructions, either.

"Lots of patients brush way too hard, no matter what we tell them," said Dr. Susan Karabin, a periodontist in Manhattan and the president of the American Academy of Periodontology. "They think they're not doing a good job unless they're spraying toothpaste all over the vanity."

Fret not. The oral care industry is here to help. Can't be bothered to move the brush on your own? The new Ultreo brush ($170) adds ultrasound to sonic bristle action to make things even easier. Just hold the handsome orange-tinged gadget in one spot until you get the signal to relocate it. This hint occurs every 30 seconds.

Living Well Snack away Santa health

Not to break up the Santa fun, but it's tempting to wonder if all those cookies and-milk snacks won't send St. Nick on a sugar crash rather than his appointed rounds.

Bah, humbug to that notion, say a couple of local nutritionists.

"The milk is a good addition to the cookies," said Emily Edison, who operates the Momentum Nutrition and Fitness practice in Kenmore. "You get some protein with the snack, not just carbohydrates and fat."

"Hey, come on, Santa is out there burning a lot of calories," said Kathleen Putnam of the NutritionWorks practice based in Seattle. "And we sort of want him plump."

In fact, both dietitians said snacking, or eating "mini-meals" as Edison likes to call them, can be an effective step to a healthier 2008.

"Mini-meals get people to think more about healthy options than something out of a vending machine," said Edison, whose practice offers nutrition counseling, personal training and fitness consulting. "Mini-meals are more like half a turkey sandwich, a tortilla rolled up with ham and cheese or soup."

Edison said variety is best for your soup choices. "You can look for soups with beans or veggies, ones that are broth-based. Minestrone is a great choice."

She didn't rule out clam chowder. "I'm a big fan myself, so I would never say don't have some chowder. Just not every day."

Santa might not have time for soup, but a half-sandwich might well hit that jelly-belly spot.

Putnam offered other healthy "smaller meal" ideas to get us thinking outside of the vending machine or prepackaged foods aisle.

"You want to look for where you can add protein," she said. "You can get carbohydrates anywhere. So have some nuts with dried fruit. Or cheese and fresh fruit, maybe cheese and crackers. Half your lunch now, then the other half in two hours. Or think portable, like a hard-boiled egg, apple and bun."

The half-lunch idea sounds good, but Putnam acknowledged some clients -- and a former editor friend of mine -- always struggled not to eat the rest of the sandwich.

"Make it three-quarters if you must," she said. "But you want to eat to energize, not until you are overfull. Stop short of that. The reason why your editor wanted to eat the rest of his lunch sandwich is probably because he didn't have a mid-morning snack."

"Lots of people don't get or trust the frequency thing," Putnam said. "They are sort of scared of snacking, especially if they have tried (restrictive) diets. It takes some work on that behavior to get over those beliefs that snacking will add weight."

Edison said there is no evidence that eating at night puts on pounds.

"It's more that we gain weight when eating at night even when we are not hungry," she said. "That's why I am a huge fan of TiVO. You don't get in the habit of going for a snack (during commercials)."

Edison said that adding protein to your snacks can lead to more clear-headedness and less thinking about being hungry. She talks regularly to clients about eating three mini-meals between a hearty breakfast and a lean protein, whole grain, at least two vegetables dinner. Pull out those half-sandwiches or yogurts with a handful of almonds at the first sign of personal hunger -- not when you are shaky, feeling lightheaded, headachy or irritable. Stomach growling? You waited too long.

"You probably never want to go more than three hours without some food," she said. "And skip the big lunch. Unfortunately, the siesta system doesn't really work in this country."

Both nutritionists emphasized the value of breakfast to not only start the day but help curb mindless eating and "empty calories" snacks.

"A hearty breakfast is three or four foods, while a snack is two foods," said Edison. "Oatmeal with raisins and walnuts, a glass of milk and a piece of fresh fruit is a healthy breakfast. A cereal alone, like Cheerios with nonfat milk, is not going to satisfy you."

years of school nurses in Seattle health

School nurses have always had a vital role, making sure students were healthy and ready to learn. And even though their responsibilities have increased as modern medicine has evolved, the heart of the job hasn't changed.

These days, the district's 65 nurses are more likely to field phone calls or e-mails from parents than make house calls. Two of the nurses are men, and all the school nurses have at least a bachelor's degree in the field. Much of their time is spent conducting state-mandated health screenings or developing emergency-care plans for students with life-threatening illnesses.

"Our job is so broad, and what people think we do is so limited," said nurse Marie DeBell, who conducts preschool health assessments and splits the rest of her time between West Woodland Elementary and John Stanford International School.
That may mean finding eyeglasses for a nearsighted child without health insurance, connecting a troubled teen with a counselor or screening children for scoliosis, or hearing and vision problems.

Living Well Snack away Santa

In fact, both dietitians said snacking, or eating "mini-meals" as Edison likes to call them, can be an effective step to a healthier 2008.

Putnam said she realizes it can be hard to get a good breakfast some mornings. Whether you are scurrying or end up at a morning meeting with not so healthy choices (can you say pastries?), Putnam said something in your body typically is better than nothing.

For instance, if "you do the Seattle thing" and coffee is your breakfast, a latte is the healthier choice compared to black Americano with espresso shots and hot water. At the meeting, look for fruit or yogurt. But if a doughnut or scone is all you can get, better to eat part of it with a cup of mhttp://www.blogger.com/
Kevin health clubilk if available.

Which brings us back to Santa's milk and cookies. Edison said it is possible to make for healthier cookies by substituting walnuts for peanuts ("higher in the healthy omega-3 fats"), using some whole-wheat flour in place of all-purpose white flour ("if you use all whole-wheat flour, the cookies will probably get too hard") and using less sugar than designated ("almost every recipe can be reduced about half or so" without affecting the taste or texture of the goodie).

New Pet Birds May Carry Illness

A warning has been issued to the public that some recently purchased cockatiels or other pet birds may pose a health risk to people who are exposed to them.

The Washington State Department of Health said Friday that some birds shipped by a national wholesale distributor tested positive for avian chlamydiosis.

Health officials say about 20 PetSmart stores in 11 counties in the state have received birds from the vendor.

Officials say the pet store chain has voluntarily removed all birds supplied by the vendor and is treating its sick and exposed birds with antibiotics.

The department says there have been no reports so far of people in the state contracting the human form of the disease, called psittacosis.

Trust Me A Junior Doctor Man Health

Then my mind wandered back to those days spent hunched over medical textbooks and I remembered how my main motivation for studying was so I could work in a uniquely British institution of which I was, and remain Man Health, immensely proud. There is nothing quite like the NHS in the world and it embodies some basic British values; they are distilled into its very existence and the fabric of its being.

So, if you want to learn about Britishness, look no further than our health service.Man Health It’s cranky and impractical and archaic. Having A Bald Hair Day Health Fitness

What I found after a visit to trichologist Glenn Lyons at the Philip Kingsley Clinic, is that like many women, I was also a victim of androgenetic alopecia, Health Fitness an inherited condition which causes gradual thinning of the hair over many years. It’s not quite as horrendous as it sounds.

I’ve worn it only twice as it made me feel self-conscious; on seeing me in it, a girlfriend whom I hadn’t let in on my secret squealed: “Your hair’s amazing! You look like an ad for Toni%26amp;Guy!” I take comfort from another friend who bought a wig during chemotherapy. Her hair has grown back even better than it was before, Health Fitness and she only needs to wheel out her impressively natural-looking wig when she can’t be bothered to spend ages styling her hair.

We spend billions in pursuit of swingy, silky, lustrous hair because we understand just how potent a weapon it is in our sexual armoury. On a rare good-hair day,Health Fitness I feel more feminine, confident and attractive. If hair loss is scary for men, it’s doubly so for women. How many men would ask a bald woman for a date? Would any woman turn down an interesting guy purely on the basis that he didn’t have much hair?

Cut-rate gourmet store Trader Joe's draws devotees

Larry Bleiberg

The Dallas Morning News

SANTA FE, N.M. - It looked like a lot of luggage for a weekend trip: Three suitcases and two big boxes. But it was easy carrying them to the airline counter. Most were empty.

I was taking them to New Mexico to fill them up.

Two days later, when I checked in at the Albuquerque airport for the flight home, they were stuffed. I had boxes packed with wine, Thai-spiced peanuts, cans of corn chowder, organic dog biscuits, hand lotion, dried gooseberries and much more.

advertisement

Yes, I know we have grocery stores in Dallas. But we don't have a Trader Joe's.

For those who don't know the store, my behavior seems bizarre. For those who do, it's perfectly understandable.

Trader Joe's has that effect on people.

When the chain opened its first Manhattan branch in March, the news made The New York Times. The specialty grocery store sells gourmet products at a discount. Think of it as Central Market at Wal-Mart prices.

The chain started in Southern California, conquered the West Coast, and moved to the east about a decade ago. Slowly now, it's closing in on Texas. The nearest stores to Dallas are in the St. Louis area. Santa Fe got one three years ago, Albuquerque this spring. This autumn, Atlanta will fall.

The store has an unofficial Web site started by fans (TrackingTraderJoes.com). Shoppers trade tips and rumors on Internet discussion boards. Communities have started mailing campaigns urging the chain to come to town. Trader Joe's doesn't sell on the Internet.

For certain travelers, every trip that includes a Trader Joe's city requires finding time for a quick visit and, of course, leaving extra room in the suitcase. Because, as I soon saw, I'm not the only one to haul jars of organic peanut butter across state lines.

(My trip was before the new airline carry-on restrictions, but there's nothing that would keep a traveler from making a similar haul today. Travelers can still check luggage with liquids, spreads and other items banned from carry-on bags.)

Or you can drive.

"We have an RV, so we're filling up the freezer," said Lisa Mackey, who was taking home about $300 worth of groceries from the Santa Fe Trader Joe's to her home in Durango, Colo. While she stood near bags of frozen Peruvian chimichurri rice, her husband explained that they figured the money they were saving on fish alone would pay for their gas.

Flash-frozen tuna fillets go for $4.99 a pound at Trader Joe's, about a third of the Colorado price. And they're much tastier, the couple said. This was their second visit to the store. They had come by the day before to pick up deodorant, pesto, capers and simmer sauces.

For those of us without RVs, the choices narrow just a bit.

As hard as it was to bypass the gelato, the Greek-chicken pizza and the frozen cubes of fresh basil, my wife and I stuck to nonperishables as we cruised the store.

Chocolate-coated dried fruit, lavender dryer sheets, cranberry apple chutney. Our cart was filling up.

Trader Joe's was started in California in 1967 by Joe Coulombe. His niche, gourmet food on a miser's budget, appealed to well-traveled shoppers seeking cuisine they had tried on their trips. He figured his customers would be overeducated and underpaid.

From the beginning, the chain took pride in its lack of pretension. Stores are generally in out-of-the-way shopping centers where rent is cheap. They're also smaller than a typical grocery store, rarely topping 15,000 square feet. And most items are private-label. Some are branded Trader Joe's, although Italian goods are called Trader Giotto; Mexican foods, Trader Jose's; and Asian products, Trader Ming.

Trader Joe's is now owned by the low-cost German grocery chain Aldi. Coulombe, no longer with the firm, now serves on the board of Cost Plus World Markets.

But Trader Joe's sense of fun hasn't changed.

The company uniform is Hawaiian shirts. In the cookie section, you can find a box labeled A Fig Walks Into a Bar. In the household goods aisle, there's Next to Godliness hand soap. Food samples abound. Staffers are authorized to open goods for customers to taste.

Santa Fe store manager Darren Haines said out-of-town bulk shoppers are easy to spot. You see them pulling two grocery carts, overflowing with jars of Indian simmer sauces, bags of dried blueberries and wine. Lots of wine.

Trader Joe's made national news five years ago when it started selling Charles Shaw wine for $1.99 a bottle. The vintage, exclusive to Trader Joe's, wasn't bad, shoppers insisted. It soon became known as "Two-Buck Chuck."

At its height of popularity, Charles Shaw accounted for 20 percent of all the wine sold in California.

Now the price has skyrocketed to $2.99 a bottle. But Three-Buck Chuck still has its fans.

One woman lined up at the checkout stand with six cases she planned to drive back to Oklahoma. Betty, who refused to give her last name ("Bartlesville is a conservative town"), said the wine was pretty good.

"We like the cabernet," she said. "We're going to try a case of the shiraz this time, too."

Trader Joe's says it doesn't discuss expansion plans. The company has grown slowly but methodically over its history, paying for growth from earnings, not by borrowing.

John Hummel of McKinney, Texas, gets his Trader Joe's fix every time he visits his parents in Tucson.

"One time I even brought a mostly empty suitcase so I would have plenty of room to haul back my stash," he said. "I love their coffees, Hawaiian-style potato chips, their spreads and sauces, the dried fruit and their trail mix."

Store employees understand.

Diane Coleman said that before Trader Joe's opened in Santa Fe, she used to bring groceries back to New Mexico after visiting family in California. "I would drag everything I could on an airplane. I would carry baby artichokes home on my lap."

On the way back to the airport for our return flight, my wife and I decided to detour to the Albuquerque store. It was past lunchtime, and we all know it's never wise to shop hungry. Trader Joe's has packaged takeout, so we did the only rational thing.

We selected boxes of Thai-spiced chicken pasta and Southwestern beans and corn salad, plus containers of flavored Greek-style yogurt (fig and honey). Then we perched on the store's curb for a snack.

We could survey the parking lot where our rental car was now loaded with 105 pounds of groceries, distributed in boxes, suitcases and computer bags.

We still had a few minutes to kill. I suggested we go back in for one last look.

A few minutes later, we emerged with a bottle of Coastal cabernet and some pomegranate-blueberry juice.

There was, I just knew, a little more room in the red suitcase.

Ix Infected By Bird Flu In Pakistan Anthem Health

Pakistan has recorded its first human death from bird flu and six other people have been infected with the deadly H5N1 virus over the last two months, a senior Health Ministry official said yesterday.

"Seven in total. One died and six other people were infected with the H5N1 virus,'' Federal Health Secretary Khushnood Akhtar Lashari told Reuters. "It was confirmed by blood tests."

A World Health Organisation (WHO) team will arrive in Pakistan in the next few days. Some 340 people worldwide are known to have contracted the disease which has killed more than 200 since 2003, WHO says.Indonesia has the heaviest toll, with 115 human cases including 92 deaths, followed by Vietnam with 100 cases and 46 deaths.

Indonesia rules out bird flu cluster

Indonesia has cleared six members of a family hospitalised with bird flu symptoms, a health official said, in a case that has raised concerns over potential human-to-human spread of the disease.

It also comes as the World Health Organisation investigates a suspected case of limited human-to-human transmission of the H5N1 bird flu virus in Pakistan.

The six Indonesians from a small village in Banten province, just hours from the capital Jakarta, had been suffering from high fever after more than a dozen sick ducks died in their backyard.

Two sets of laboratory tests showed the six admitted to a hospital in Jakarta did not have the H5N1 virus, said Nyoman Kandun, director-general of communicable disease control at Indonesia's health ministry.

Govt 'must come clean' on hospital delay Anthem Health

Opposition health spokeswoman Jillian Skinner has demanded NSW Health Minister Reba Meagher "come clean" on what health services will be guaranteed in the Northern Sydney/Central Coast Area Health region Anthem Health.

Mrs Skinner said the budget for the hospital project has blown out to over $400 million and the deadline for completion of the planning stage pushed back another year to the end of 2008.

Don't Overindulge Over Xmas Anthem Health

The Australia Medical Association said many Australians associated heavy drinking with the festive season, but urged people to have a good time without putting their health at risk.

"Alcohol abuse is the cause of many chronic health problems including cardiovascular disease, obesity, liver disease, and brain damage, and can lead to serious health risks such as acute alcohol poisoning.

Hunter New England oral health clinical director Dr Lanny Chor said people not only ate more sugar but ate it more frequently during the Christmas period."One of the problems with the Christmas cake, chocolate-coated peanuts, candy canes, glace cherries and champagne is that there is often a continual period of eating between Christmas and New Year, exposing teeth to continuous acid attacks."

Recent World Health Organisation data showed Australians eat an average 63 kilograms of sugar each year - more than a kilogram a week.

Pas Just What The Doctor Ordered Anthem Health

should have assistants who can order tests, dispense medicines and even make diagnoses, says a new health think tank.

The Australian Health Workforce Institute has called for the introduction of US-style physicians assistants (PAs) to help reduce reliance on overseas-trained doctors. The university has teamed up with Queensland Health to create jobs for the graduates. The South Australian Government is considering trialling PAs.

But Peter Brooks, faculty of health sciences dean at the University of Queensland and interim director of the Australian Health Workforce Institute, said PAs take about half the time of a medical student to train and can perform the less complex tasks that take up so much of a doctor's time.Health Minister Nicola Roxon said the issue of physicans' assistants was "not high on my list of priorities".

"Whether it takes a couple of months, it is up to him. We've just got to give him the support that he needs."

"What myself and Brett were alluding to was the fact that sacking him would help no one - it was just a quick fix," he said Club Health.

"We were more concerned about Tim Smith the person, rather than Tim Smith the player Club Health.

Sharks Ok After Staph Scare Club Health

Sharks coach Ricky Stuart says the club has recovered after a potentially deadly infection was caught by up to a dozen players at the Club Health.

Cronulla coach Ricky Stuart says the Sharks' pre-season has been unaffected by a golden staph infection that swept through the NRL club's playing group.

Up to 12 Cronulla players were reported to have been diagnosed with the potentially deadly infection but both Stuart and Club Health doctor David Givney today insisted the situation was now well under control.

Newly-recruited Sharks forward Adam Peek was the worst affected and was hospitalised for five days, while Luke Douglas and Dustin Cooper were among the other players reportedly affected.

"We put him in there to get rid of the infection. He could have kept training and putting other players at risk but we put him in hospital to make sure we were clear and we all moved on Club Health," Stuart said.

Dr Givney said the first occurrence of the infection was discovered "three or four weeks ago" Club Health and said the club had continued testing players and would do so up until their final training session before the Christmas break on Monday.

"We introduced a health protocol last Tuesday Club Health. That's been going for a week and it has to go for two weeks so it's going to go right up until Christmas Eve," Dr Givney said.

"Some of them were very, very minor things. Almost like they were turning up with little pimples and things and were treating them just in case.

Sharks Overcome Golden Staph Scare Club Health

Cronulla coach Ricky Stuart says the Sharks' pre-season has been unaffected by a golden staph infection that swept through the NRL club's playing group.

"A few players missed one to two sessions but I think we're now on top of it Club Health," Stuart told AAP.

"We haven't got a player missing (from training) now and our training in our off-season has not been disrupted whatsoever.

Newly-recruited Sharks forward Adam Peek was the worst affected and was hospitalised for five days, while Luke Douglas and Dustin Cooper were among the other players reportedly affected.

Stuart said Peek was only hospitalised as a precaution and was now back in full training with his teammates.

"We put him in there to get rid of the infection. He could have kept training and putting other players at risk but we put him in hospital to make sure we were clear and we all moved on," Stuart said.

Dr Givney said the first occurrence of the infection was discovered "three or four weeks ago" and said the club had continued testing players and would do so up until their final training session before the Christmas break on Monday Club Health.

"We introduced a health protocol last Tuesday. That's been going for a week and it has to go for two weeks so it's going to go right up until Christmas Eve," Dr Givney said.

Dr Givney said the infection had almost certainly spread from one of the players carrying it and not from the club's temporary training ground Forshaw Rugby Park, but re-iterated the situation was well under control.

Cats Move To Stop Nathan Ablett Rumours Club Health

Geelong have issued an update over the AFL future of Nathan Ablett following rumours about his welfare.

The club decided to issue Monday's media release to dispel the unfounded speculation, which had gathered momentum over the weekend Club Health.

Ablett quit pre-season training late last month and is understood to be travelling in Victoria.

"He has been suspended until everyone involved including the player Club Health, the club and the medical practitioners can review and assess Tim's rehabilitation,'' he told AAP.

There were fears the Eels would tear Smith's contract up after the club found the 22-year-old drinking just days after being issued a 12-month alcohol ban.

Fewer Small Businesses Offer Travel Health Insurance

Small businesses that offer health insurance to their employees continued to drop this year, even though costs of coverage rose only 6.1 percent.Only 61 percent of employers with fewer than 200 employees offered health coverage this year, down from 63 percent in 2006. In 2002, 66 percent of small employers provided health insurance.

This year marked the third year in a row of moderate increases in health insurance costs, following years of double-digit percentage hikes. Costs next year are expected to grow even less, but they will remain twice as high as the inflation rate, Mercer projects. Both large and small employers who offer health insurance have shifted more of the cost to their employees through higher deductibles.

Large employers in particular are using health management programs as a way to control costs, Mercer found.Growth in consumer-directed Travel Health Insurance plans. which cost less than other types of health insurance, also helped curb overall health costs, according to Mercer. The percentage of covered employees enrolled in either a health savings account or a Travel Health Insurance reimbursement account rose from 3 percent in percent this year.

Compelling Travel Health Insurance Is Not So Un American

John Powers thinks it is un-American to mandate that everyone buy health insurance. We already have several such mandates which are working smoothly, thank you. Let us start with Social Security and Medicare Travel Health Insurance. How is it that we Americans are being forced to save to finance our living upon retirement and not become a ward of the state Travel Health Insurance.

Despite his claims to the unenforceability of positive duty, the IRS is not having any problem in collecting these payments. Mr. Powers and I have no choice but to pay for Social Security and Medicare. The same system will work for health insurance.

The case for requiring everyone to buy health insurance is the same as that for requiring motorcyclists to wear helmets -- society, i.e. taxpayers, pays for whatever health care may be needed, and for however long. We pay to care for someone severely ill without health insurance, or for the severely injured helmetless cyclist if his Health Insurance runs out.

Suit Against Ministers Over Supplementary Travel Health Insurance

Knesset Speaker Dalia Itzik and the health funds demanding that the Arrangements Bill not include any mention of supplementary health insurance provided by the insurers. The inclusion of a prohibition against the health funds offering supplementary health insurance that provides medications not included in the official basket of health services, the plaintiffs said.

the issue can be discussed seriously and not pushed through on the whim of the Finance Ministry with Health Ministry approval, they argued. While 70 percent of the population have taken out supplementary health insurance for dozens of shekels per month per person, most of the others can't afford health policies from private insurance companies.

Ben-Yizri earlier this year allowed Maccabi Health Services and Clalit Health Services to offer extra medications with their supplementary health insurance policies.which involves life-and-death matters, to be voted on without an in-depth discussion in Knesset committees - especially when the state has so far failed to take responsibility for satisfactory updating of the basket of health services.

The Senate Health Policy Committee is scheduled to discuss the bills Dec.Cox said Health Insurance. People with existing health problems might pay as much as 80% more, he said, and his office and consumers would not be allowed to challenge the rates Health Insurance.

Joining Cox were AARP's Michigan chapter and Consumers Union, a nonprofit health advocacy organization. Create a guaranteed insurance pool to provide coverage for people who can't otherwise purchase health insurance, often because they are sick and costlier to cover. Rates for people in the pool would be set according to age, county of residence and health problems Health Insurance.

here a number of strategies being undertaken to improve and extend health care services to as many members of the Fund and the general public as possible.upgrading and registering new drug dispensing outlets to broaden access to health care services.
