Many patrons at Bally's Total Fitness on Edgeboro Road are still unaware of the rampant thefts from lockers and cars that have taken place at the health club. Police said there were 50 thefts reported in 2006 and nearly 40 so far this year.
Police have a description of a man and a woman who may be responsible. The woman is described as a white female in her 30s, 5 feet 8 inches tall, with an average build and shoulder-length brown hair. The woman is said to speak with a European accent and has been seen wearing a black leather jacket.
Bally's has taken steps to improve security by installing high-tech video cameras inside the club and in the parking lot. Video from those cameras is being reviewed. But in the meantime, the thefts go on. Police advise leaving valuables at home and wearing keys around your neck.
Police said there have been other thefts in other gyms in the township, but Bally's seems to be the main target. This may be made easier because people can print an online pass for a free day at the gym, making it easier to go in anonymously.
East Brunsiwck police Lt. Robert Strempek said the break-ins at Bally's moved to the parking lot this week, where three break-ins occurred. He noted that the break-ins occurred outside the facility — not indoors. He said the incidents remain under investigation.
